What is Number Porting?

Under FCC regulations, you legally own your phone numbers, not your carrier. Number porting is the highly regulated background process of transferring the routing of your phone number from your old carrier to your new provider (like VirPhone).

Because it requires coordination between two competing telecom companies and a central national database, it requires precise paperwork to prevent fraud and unauthorized transfers (known as 'slamming').

Crucial Rule: Do Not Cancel Your Old Service!

You can only port active numbers. If you cancel your old service before the port is completely finished, you will lose your numbers permanently. Your old service will automatically cancel once the port completes.

The Paperwork: LOA and CSR

Letter of Agency (LOA)

This is a legal document you sign giving VirPhone permission to act on your behalf and request the numbers from your current carrier. The information on the LOA must match your old bill exactly—if your old bill says 'Inc.' and your LOA says 'LLC', it will be rejected.

Customer Service Record (CSR)

This is a hidden document on your old carrier's backend that details the exact authorized name, service address, and PIN for your numbers. We highly recommend asking your current carrier for a copy of your CSR before starting a port, as it guarantees we have the exact right data to submit.

Zero Downtime Strategy

Many businesses fear they will lose calls while the port is happening. With proper planning, downtime is zero.

Here is how VirPhone handles it:

  1. We give you temporary phone numbers to use immediately while we set up your new phone system.
  2. You forward your old numbers to these temporary VirPhone numbers.
  3. Your new phones start ringing immediately, and you can test all the routing.
  4. We submit the port request. 7-14 days later, the port completes in the background.
  5. The temporary numbers are swapped for your real numbers automatically. Your customers never hear a busy signal.
